A letter to The Democrat and Chronicle from Brian Stratton, Director of the New York State Canal Corporation.
He spells out the reasons why vegetation removal is a top priority for the Authority.
“We intend to follow the best practices set forth by these agencies and dam experts. At the same time, it is important to note the majority of the banks will remain tree-lined where the canal is not elevated above the surrounding area. This work is limited only to the highest-risk areas where an embankment failure is a serious risk.
Protecting against such extreme events must be a top priority, so we can ensure the Erie Canal remains safe for generations to come.”
