The Round Goby
Who ever heard of such a thing? A round what? Well, here it is- an ugly little creature and it’s in our canal.
It’s an invasive species, swilled out of the ballast tanks of ‘salty’ ships from Eurasian shores.
I caught one off my dock in The Oxbow, and I thought it was a mud-skipper, so threw it back. As you can see, it took a red worm bait.
The fish is only 4″ long, but its ruining the native species of the Great Lakes. It eats all the eggs of most fish and vigorously defends prime egg laying territory.
Our fish stocks are in grave danger from this miniature monster, and if you are ever fishing for small fish and you catch one, KILL IT!
